THE MORALITY OF HEALTH.

There’s something tricky about “health and wellness” in America. It is, in a lot of ways, directly correlated to wealth. We see big, celebrity names like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian peddling vagina-scented candles and $655 skincare serum. We hear that our favorite celebrities take pilates classes 6 days a week or even rumors that our favorite athletes’ million dollar hyperbaric chamber. Here’s another kicker: Wealth, in America, is directly correlated to morality. If this is news to you, I can pause for effect.
Pauses.
Yes, it’s true. It’s why we see a woman with a Chanel bag and sunglasses and unconsciously assume she’s more hardworking than a woman with two kids at a bus stop. We do it all of the time. Americans make moral judgements on people that are unclean, overweight, or anything in between. However, that’s not why we’re here.
How do the moral judgements that we make on society… impact our own view of health and wellness?
I’ve been sick for days- and it’s been a doozy. I rarely get sick, so when I do… I’m usually down for the count. My throat feels like sandpaper and it’s incredible inflamed. In a similar view to rest and relaxation (my previous post), I found myself thinking about my care. I had a hard time advocating for myself. I thought, “Maybe, this morning, I would not bustle around the house making breakfast, cleaning toys, and trying to pee with Noa climbing on top of me.” I decided to make tea and as the old folks say, “sit down somewhere”.
It’s dangerous to believe that we have to earn the right to be and get well. If no one’s told you, YOU DESERVE IT. You deserve to take care of yourself.
Here’s a recipe for tea that’s helped me a bit:
Hot water
Lemons
Ginger (cut up)
Elderberries
Honey
*and as a lazy hack for me.. herbal tea packets
(Let the tea packets and ingredients boil in water for 6 minutes and then steep for at least 5).
Take care of yourself this holiday and flu season. More sleep. More fluids. Fresh & colorful produce.
Love you!
